Gommecourt Village And Wood From The South East. March 28, 1993 (93/108/21)
Gommecourt is in the centre, Gommecourt Wood left of centre and Foncquevillers beyond the village and wood.
The German front lines skirted the edge of Gommecourt Wood, crossing the road leading from the foreground to the village just before the dogleg in the road.
At the time of the attack, Gommecourt was a strongly fortified village held by the Germans.
This was the sector attacked by the 56th (London) Division. Initially they were successful, taking the German front lines and advancing right across the picture as far as the track on the right which was the point at which they were supposed to meet up with the 46th (North Midlands) Division.
The meeting up never happened, and gradually throughout the afternoon and evening of July 1 the Londoners were beaten back, losing all the ground they had fought so hard to win.
