Panayia Tou Sindi

We visited the fascinating and deserted Panayia tou Sindi monastery, miles from anywhere in the Potamos Valley.

Panagia tou Sindi, which is abandoned today, lies near the villages of Pendalia and Agia Marina.

Situated in the valley of the River Potamos, it can only be reached along unmade tracks. A challenge to find, but well worth the effort.

We approached the monastery from the east, across the at the time dried up river bed.  After the winter rains it's probably a whole lot more challenging.

Οnly a small but impressive church of the monastery is preserved in relatively good condition, dating to the 16th century.

This is a single-aisled church with an eight-sided external dome.

The mid afternoon sun was low enough to make some interesting shapes and shadows.

Combine those with the rough stonework of the building and the paths around it and there was a lot of fun to be had as a photographer!

Check out the pictures of Panayia tou Sindi.
