Polemi Concentration Camp

On the edge of Polemi, next to SODAP's Kamanterena Winery, is the interesting 'Polemi Concentration Camp'.

The camp dates from the times of Cyprus' struggle for independence from Britain.

The camp was built by the British to contain members of the Cypriot organisation EOKA.  It was built near Polemi as it is so cold in the area and the British used take the prisoners out in their underwear and shower them down with cold water.

EOKA were dedicated to gaining independence for Cyprus from the British - a struggle that lasted from 1955 to 1959.

The camp was restored by ΣΙΜΑΕ - an organisaton dedicated preserving the memory of EOKA - on behalf of the Cypriot Ministry for Education and Culture.

The restored camp was opened by the (since deceased) Minister for Education and Culture Mr Pevkios Georgiadis on 17 October 2004.

(Thanks Marios and Yvonne for helping piece this together.  If anybody else an add anything else, please let me know.)

I also visited the camp last week and found it in a very sad state of repair. As the previous contributor stated the pictures that are inside the one hut are all captioned in Greek and there is little else by way of explanation. There is a model of the camp, as I presume it was, that is in a poor state of repair and appears to show all the inmates with their hands up as if at gunpoint. There is also a small display cabinet of articles that I think shows items of wood that were carved/made by the inmates. The glass top was so dusty that you were unable to see through to get a proper view of the display. Also the lights in the hut were not working. Sad condition for this monument to be in when you think of the well kept monument/museum in Paphos to the landing place of the ilitary leader of EOKA.

I visited this concentration camp last week. Lots of info on it in Greek, nothing in English hence me searching details out on the internet.

Free entry, you can look around a hut and see pictures of who, I presume were the inmates. If you are inclined to, you can even climb up the watch tower. It seems though that local youth tend to use the place as a drinking den!
