Carnival Time At Paphos!

 It's Paphos Carnival today!

For a couple of weeks everybody's been talking about it.  Even the staff in the local supermarket have been wearing fancy costumes as a part of the celebrations.  So we just had to go and see.

The whole of the centre of Paphos had been cordoned off, and the crowds were deep along both sides of the road where the procession was to take place.  OK so its not Rio de Janeiro, but the colours were brilliant and the music was deafening!

From a photography perspective, this one was a challenge.  Deep crowds lined the route, so how to get a clear shot?  I climbed up on a wall.  How to keep the pictures as clean as possible?  Use a long lens - I stuck the 70-200 on.  How to deal with the bright sunshine and deep shadows?  Fill flash, turned down one third of a stop.

With the principles sorted, I then just watched the action.  Looking for faces, expressions, movement...

Any problems?  I need a faster flash recycling time.  You see something start to happen, you know you've got one shot, continuous shooting wasn't an option.

Despite all that, I'm pleased with the pictures.  Check them out at my album of Paphos Carnival.
