I'm still getting to grips with my new Nikon D700, and this was it's first outing at night.

I'm working on a project at the moment illustrating lots of villas around Coral Bay, Pegeia and Agios Georgios and I wanted some contextual pictures to support that.

Sure sunny pictures are what's expected, but dramatic lighting always gives a bunch of pictures a lift.  And there's nothing more dramatic than the crossover period between day and night when the sky is still blue and the lights twinkle.

Shooting the picture was perfectly standard.  I was tempted to explore the high ISO settings the D700 is capable of, but instead opted for a safe shot at ISO 200.  The only difficulty was it was a breezy evening, so the five second exposure necessitated waiting for lulls in the wind to make the exposure.

Slightly left of centre of the shot you can make out a yellow sign on a hotel building.  We live very near that hotel.  On the full size picture I was gobsmacked to discover its perfectly readable as the "Ascos Coral Beach".  It must be a good two miles from where I made the picture to the sign.

The resolution the D700 is capable of is quite astounding.

The rest of my pictures of Coral Bay can be found in my Gallery of Pegeia and Coral Bay.
