I've been mega busy of late, but as the evenings have gradually got lighter, so the opportunity to take sunset pictures has increased.

It was a clear, warm, Spring day so I headed out of the gloom of the study and up the coast road from Coral Bay to Agios Georgios.

The coastline at Agios Georgios is ideal for making sunset pictures.  It faces west - always a good start!  There's lots of foreground interest in the rock formations.  There's the little turtle-shaped island to play with.  All in all, lots of potential to explore.

If you're in Cyprus, Agios Georgios is a photo opportunity you shouldn't miss.

Taking the pictures was straightforward.  The camera was firmly fixed to the tripod - I like long exposures to get some movement into the sea.  Nice heavy 0.9 / three stop hard graduated filter to hold the sky back.  Wait for the waves to crash over the rocks.  Job done.

I was talking with a mate the other day who likes a 'big sun' in his sunset shots, and was questioning why the sun in mine is small.

Easy - it's a question of focal length.  The shot above was taken with a 17-35mm zoom at the 17mm end.  That makes the sun look small.  If I'd wanted a big sun, I'd have used the 70-200mm lens, at 200mm.  That pulls the sun in and makes it much bigger in the frame.

There's then a question of timing.  I like the sun to be just above the horizon, and to show the complete disk.  Alternatively, I wait for the sun to disappear completely, and then shoot the orange sky.  For some reason the sun bisected by the horizon doesn't float my boat.

To check out this and other shots from the area, go to the album of pictures of Agios Georgios.
