Lightning Flashes!

Throughout the afternoon the clouds had steadily built into threatening towering cumulus over the hills.

There hadn't been any rain, but then we are in Cyprus!

As the sun set, so the thunderstorm activity increased.  At one point, whichever way you looked there were big flashes across the sky.  No rain, just a sky flashing constantly.  As a lightshow, this was spectacular.

I've never tried to photograph lightning - so this was my chance.

Easy really.  Camera on the tripod, facing in the direction of the storm.  Wide angle lens to make it easy to get all the lightning flash in, even when you're not certain exactly where its going to happen.  Manual mode, f5.6, ISO200, 30 seconds exposure and off we go.

It took luck for the lightning flashes to happen when the shutter was open - but this storm activity was so constant that on occasion there were two flashes during the 30 second exposure.

Interestingly the lightning completely fooled the Nikon's normally very accurate white balance, but on the basis I was shooting in RAW that was easily fixed on the computer.

To see the other lightning shots, go to my album of Polemi pictures.
