Liepzig Redoubt From The South West

The Liepzig Redoubt occupied the area to the south of Thiepval, roughly from the site of the Memorial to the Missing (upper left) to the isolated clump of trees (upper right of centre).

Thiepval

Thiepval ridge dominated much of the surrounding area and was generally considered to be the strongest German position in the Somme sector. 

By July 1, 1916 the Germans had occupied Thiepval for exactly two years.
