West Cumberland Industrial Steam, 1970-1971

By 1971 the days of the last industrial steam in West Cumberland were very limited.

Two locations remained, the National Coal Board (NCB) at Workington and the docks at Whitehaven. The latter were served by both the Workington Docks & Harbour Board (WD&HB) and the National Coal Board.

Even though I lived relatively close by on the outskirts of Carlisle, as a 15 year old I didn't have the means to get around as much as I would have wished and was studying hard for 'O' Levels.

Shame! If I'd known then what I know now I'd have spent all my waking hours chasing them down. Sadly I made just two visits. But so rewarding!

See my pictures of UK Industrial Steam.
