The Nanpiao Coal Railway is located In Liaoning Province in the east of China. I've visited twice - in March 2005 and January 2008.

It's a great mix of a regular steam-operated passenger service and fairly frequent coal trains. The system passes through some beautiful rural countryside and some highly industrial areas.

A particular high point is to watch the passenger service leave the station at Xiamiaozi. The scene outside the station is a huge and fascinating street market. If you want pictures of people and trains just doing their thing, this is it.

As with most Chinese steam, the days of the SYs at Nanpiao are running out. The railway now operates four diesels, and expects steam to fade away during 2009.
