Dutch Railways - an afternoon at Amsterdam Central Station in 1982

We’d gone for a weekend in Amsterdam.

In between checking out the sights of this famous city, I was able to spend a couple of hours strolling the platforms at Amsterdam Central Station.

A huge palatial structure, with the benefit of hindsight I should have made much more of the station building itself.

But at the time my fascination with railways extended only as far as the things that move, so my pictures show the various comings and goings of electric locos and multiple units.

An interesting sight was a Class 500 diesel shunter.  Closely based on the design of the British Class 08 and built by English Electric, it made a familiar sight.

Another such familiar sight was the (at the time) brand new Class 1600 electric locomotives.  Built by Alsthom in France, their obvious close relationship with an SNCF BB-7200 was clearly apparent.
