Thiepval was destroyed completely during the course of the fighting such that its continued existence after the war was questionable. 

The village was rebuilt – but today is only a hamlet. 

The huge Memorial to the Missing is on the left of the picture.  Beyond the memorial on the left hand side of the picture is Thiepval Wood. 

Soil marks are continuing evidence of the deep trenches dug here by the Germans.
