On July 1, 1987 the South Wales Branch of the Western Front Association unveiled the magnificent memorial to the 38th (Welsh) Division near Mametz Wood.

The 38th (Welsh) Division Memorial was created after seeking funding from public subscription throughout the Principality.

The 38th (Welsh) Division Memorial takes the form of an angry Welsh Dragon, overlooking Mametz Wood.  The dragon was created by David Peterson, Sculptor in Iron, with the stone for the plinth being donated by a local quarry and carved into an obelisk by Messrs. Mossfords of Cardiff.

The plinth carries the three regimental crests associated with the together with an inscription in Welsh.
